A smiling of a woman after her gum lift surgery at Blue Periodontics Gingival contouring, or gum sculpting or gingivoplasty, is a dental surgical procedure that reshapes your gumline. This procedure is often performed for cosmetic issues, although there are medical reasons that you may need one as well. One of our dentists may even recommend one if you need the operation performed for medical purposes. Gingival contouring may involve the removal of excess gumline or the addition of gumline depending on the circumstances.

Here at Blue Periodontics we recognize the importance of having a smile that you can be proud of. Our team of experienced dental health professionals is dedicated to giving each patient the attention and care they need to confidently undergo any necessary or cosmetic dental procedure. If you think that you may need gingival contouring, then continue reading to find out more information on the subject.

Why would you need gingival contouring?

There are two main reasons that you may need gingival contouring. The first is for cosmetic purposes and the second is for medical purposes. We will first go over the cosmetic reasons for gingival contouring.

Many people have receding gumlines, uneven gumlines, or overextended gumlines. In these cases, the patient may opt to undergo gingival contouring to get a more aesthetically appealing smile. Dental insurance usually will not cover the procedure because it is technically a cosmetic one.

The medicinal reason that a patient may need gingival contouring is as a result of severe periodontitis, or gum disease. Periodontitis occurs when tartar buildups are deposited in the gums, which allows bacteria to enter the jaw and cause infection and eventually decay.

A dentist will usually try a more non-invasive procedure if the disease has not advanced into its more severe state (such as scaling and planing or pocket reduction surgery). However, in the cases that the periodontitis is in its later stages, gingival contouring may be necessary to either access the tartar buildups or to fix the gumline after another surgery has been performed. In these cases, dental insurance is much more likely to cover the procedure.

What does the procedure for gingival contouring involve?

The procedure for gingival contouring usually involves either adding or removing part of the gumline to look even and natural in the mouth. If the gumline needs to be removed, an oral surgeon will just cut away part of the gumline until the remaining gumline looks natural. This is the procedure that is typically performed if the patient is receiving the gingival contouring to treat periodontitis.

If the patient has a receding gumline that they want to be fixed for cosmetic purposes, then the surgeon will add some gumline to the teeth. The tissue for the additional gumline is taken from some other part of the mouth, usually the palate, and is then added to the existing gumline to give it a larger extension over the teeth. The procedure for gingival contouring will typically last one to two hours and will be performed with anesthetics.

Gingival contouring is a dental procedure that can be performed either for medicinal or cosmetic purposes. If you think your gumline should be reshaped, call Blue Periodontics at (970) 678-3473 to set up a consultation today.
