Without daily brushing and the occasional flossing, your mouth can become susceptible to a variety of oral health issues. One of these issues is periodontal disease or periodontitis. Put shortly, periodontitis is a gum (or gingiva) disease that causes your gums to become red and swollen in the early stages and can lead to more severe complications down the line.

Here at Blue Periodontics, Dr. Marcus Blue can detect periodontal disease at its early stages and take the steps necessary to prevent it from worsening. If left untreated for too long, then the disease will move into the gumlines and you will not be able to fix it by simply brushing your teeth. In this article, we will describe the stages of periodontal disease in detail and discuss prevention and treatment methods.

What exactly is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is a disease that affects your gums. One of the reasons that you should brush your teeth daily is to prevent the buildup of bacteria. If enough bacteria are present on the teeth and gums, then it can infect the tissue surrounding the tooth, which causes red and swollen gums. This is the first stage of periodontal disease and is more commonly referred to as gingivitis.

Bacteria also create a residue on the teeth that is called plaque. Plaque can usually be removed by brushing, but if it goes untreated for a long enough time, it will harden and turn into a substance called tartar, or calculus. If this buildup of tartar moves below the gumline, then it will make your teeth harder to clean, and it can only be removed by a dental health professional.

How does periodontal disease affect the mouth?

At its earliest stages, periodontitis causes inflammation of the gums and may cause bleeding whenever you brush your teeth. You may notice irritation, tender gums, sensitive teeth, and pain when chewing. All of these symptoms are indicators that you may be in the early stages of periodontitis. Another early indicator of early periodontitis is permanent bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth, which is caused by the bacteria and tartar in the gums that cannot be removed by brushing.

In later stages, the gums surrounding the teeth may start to recede, leaving more of the teeth exposed. Eventually, this can lead to teeth becoming loose or falling out altogether. If this occurs, you should visit our offices immediately to stop the disease from progressing. Only a dental health professional can stop the disease from spreading any further.

You can prevent periodontal disease from occurring by practicing daily oral hygiene, which includes brushing and flossing. According to the CDC, 47% of adults over 30 have some periodontal disease. At ages 65 and over, this jumps to 70% of all individuals in the United States. This disease can be prevented, so make sure you are following routine hygiene practices.
